Changing the World: Social Innovation, Finance and Enterprise

This unit provides an introduction to the concepts and practices from the field of social impact, inspiring students across all disciplines to make a difference in their own unique ways. Design thinking is explored and used as a lens to view issues and solutions, encouraging new ways of thinking and approaching problems. Through panel discussions, guest lectures and projects, students have opportunities to interact with real organisations and change makers.

The unit highlights how innovation and entrepreneurship are solving major global social and economic challenges such as hunger, poverty, and homelessness and asks whether we are achieving social progress in Australia and internationally. It considers the rise of social entrepreneurship, the shift to a focus on collaboration, and the role of corporate social responsibility and impact investing in creating new opportunities for generating positive social impact.

Undergraduate students from all bachelor degrees (Arts, Design, Science, Philosophy and Commerce) are eligible to enroll.

As a student sitting in that big lecture hall you sometimes feel so small... Getting involved and actually have a debate with people like the ones participating in the panel made me feel like I am actually an important player in this world as well. I walked out from the lecture feeling really motivated and encouraged to ‘make a difference’.
